Where It Began

One rainy street. A pile of menus. One ordinary decision.

At fourteen, Jeff Kahler found a pile of pizza menus in a Maryland gutter—menus someone had been paid to deliver and had thrown away instead. He picked them up and carried them back to the shop.

He wasn’t looking for a job. He wasn’t trying to impress anyone. He simply knew it was the right thing to do. That small act opened a door—but it was only the first of countless moments that followed.

“The biggest day of my working life was built on a million tiny decisions I never made.”

What This Story Is Really About

Not one big break.
A life built slowly.

Gutter to Go-Getter is about the people who show up, the lessons that stick, the failures that teach, and the choices that quietly become a life.

01

The People Who Build Us

Family, neighbors, mentors, and the people who show up without being asked leave marks that last a lifetime.

02

The Decisions That Add Up

A life rarely turns on one grand gesture. It takes shape through a million quiet choices made when nobody is watching.

03

Service Before Success

Helping someone can be reason enough. The work matters most when it becomes a way of caring for other people.

04

Grit, Grace & the Long Road

Failures teach. Grace steadies. Grit keeps you moving through the ordinary days that eventually become a life.

About the Book

Not a rags-to-riches story. An honest one.

In the spring of 1982, fourteen-year-old Jeff Kahler started hanging flyers for a Maryland pizza shop. At fifteen, with a work permit in hand, he was making pizzas behind the counter. Three years later—with his parents putting their own house up as collateral—he bought the shop.

As the owner of Mustang Pizza, Jeff reimagined how a small business could run: credit card payments at the front door, caller ID before anyone else was using it, a risk-free guarantee, and a system of his own to cut waste. Then growth caught up with him. The debt, the pressure, and the mistakes nearly cost him everything. He didn’t walk away. He restructured and rebuilt.

In 2005, he founded Ready Training Online on a lesson he learned behind the counter: a business is only as strong as the way it trains its people. When the 2008 crash wiped out major contracts overnight, he started over again and found a new future in the convenience-store industry, growing the company into a leader before selling it in 2025.

Gutter to Go-Getter is the story of those four decades—and of the grandfather, mother, coaches, neighbors, and mentors who made them possible. It’s for anyone who has ever been told they’re too young, too broke, or too far behind, and for anyone who has had to pick themselves up and start again.
